Sometimes when you hear a song for the first time, you just know. That was the case with Australian-based, artist and producer William Truelove’s unconventional single “Split Personality.” It wasn’t about knowing that his drive was the next big thing, or that this track was a hit single, but there is a weight to this song that feels like the beginning of something important.

William can blend hip-hop elements into his style of R&B very well. In a climate of dreamy, nostalgia-fuelled R&B, William has managed to carve out an eclectically Soulful grounded-in-R&B-yet-experimental lane. His single certainly conveys the line between emotion and romance quite effortlessly. William released an album titled “Live Your Truth” with a deluxe edition releasing on October 17. Dozen Donuts recently sat down and did an interview with the young and upcoming artist to dive a little deeper into who William Truelove is and about!

How long have you been making music and what made you pursue it in the first place?

William : I started learning how to produce music and create music in 2010 after finishing high school.

I was looking for an outlet to express myself and be emotional and vulnerable. I always loved singing but was self conscious about it. I listened to Kanye’s “My beautiful Dark twisted Fantasy” and wanted to create music like that whilst also learning how to sing.

Who inspires you as an artist and why?

William : My main influences musically are

Kanye west

Drake

Tory lanez

Travis Scott

The Weeknd

Partynextdoor

These are artists I grew up listening to from age 16 till now and these artists are a big influence on my sound. They all have their unique styles but can blend sounds and Melodie’s and production is always at the top. I look upto these artists because they are in control of their own sound and control every aspect of their music in terms of the creative process as well as how they are marketed and perceived.

What is your creative process like?

William : My creative process starts with the beat or a baseline and a melody,

I will humm and mumble sing and try out a lot of different Melodie’s and flows till a song structure is made. I then finish the beat and write the song and put it into my words and what I’m trying to express and then record the whole song for the final version and add a lot of background Melodie’s to make my sound atmospheric. I truly want to immerse myself into my music (as that’s how it feels in my head) so I try and recreate that exact same feeling for the listener. I produce, write, record, mix and master all the songs myself.

How would you describe the music you create?

William : I would say my music has been on a journey but it’s expressive and emotional, It’s based on my life experiences and how I see the world. It’s basically my journey through life and how I can put that into sounds. I love being expressive and out of the box instead of trying to fit in. Creating my own sound has been a very big focus for me since I started and I feel like I have slowly been able to find exactly what I want to say and how I want to say it.

William certainly delves into a variety of different sounds and feelings. He compliments that as well with his witty wordplay that works wonders with bringing an all-around vibe in general. It would be appropriate to say that William Turelove, is a true artist in every sense of the word and is doing things on his terms and we’re simply loving the fruits of his hard work.
