D Kirk: I have been heavily invested in mucus since I was young, but going off to college and really finding myself. I found that I had a niche for music, and now it’s a passion that I hold deeply.
Who inspired you to make music?
D Kirk: I first got into music through my father, who was a DJ when I was growing up. Over time, with the influence of the greats like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and LL Cool J. I started to find my own love and passion for music.
How would you describe the
What kind of music do you usually make?
D Kirk: I would definitely say it’s different. Most of my sound is an island mix of R&B for the most part. When I do different things, I try to keep that Afrobeat feel even if it’s a slow R&B song. I’m a mixture of the best parts of music.
What is your creative process like?
D Kirk: Most of the time, my creative process is me sitting and listening to beats in the beginning. The beat and sound are the foundation of your song, so picking the perfect beat and tempo is the hardest part. After that, the lyrics fall into place based on the vibe I’m going for in that particular song. Once I’m done with my lyrics, I get to recording, usually in the middle of the night. It’s peaceful at that time. I send off my vocals and the magic happens.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
D Kirk: I could definitely see myself collaborating with Chris Brown, Kid Ink, Tyga, and many others, but those three are definitely the holy grail of artists that I would want to work with. They have all inspired me so much in the way that I deliver my music and how I go about making my music.
If you could go open a show for any artist, who would it be?
D Kirk: If I could open for anyone, it would have to be Tyga. That guy is just so raw in his music and how he goes about handling his music. Aside from the inspirational aspect, he’s one of a kind. Not too many people are like him or have his sound. I could have taken a lot from that experience.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
D Kirk: Stay consistent in everything that you do in life. Even when no one is listening or watching, you keep creating because they will come. When you get to that point where everyone is watching you, it will be more meaningful to know that you literally started from the bottom and worked your way up.
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
D Kirk: If it wasn’t for music, I would definitely be a different person, more than likely working constantly as a business professional. That’s not terrible in theory, but without music I don’t have that outlet to fully express myself and I leave people to see me the way that I want to be seen.
Where have you performed?
D Kirk: For the most part, I’ve performed on smaller stages at gatherings, mostly when I was in college and just trying to spread my music.
What are your favorite and least favorite venues?
D Kirk: My least favorite venues are those where people are not engaged with the music and they are not really feeling the vibes. For me personally, when I can bring people into my world and give them a break for a moment, is when the venue is at its height.
Do you have any upcoming shows?
D Kirk: Not at the moment but I do have big plans for the future at the moment I’m focused on releasing my next album. So definitely look out for me in the next coming months.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
D Kirk: The internet has heavily impacted the music business since so much of what people do now is based off of how we are received on the internet. It’s changed how we as artists have had to present our music. Everything now is based off of how many views you can get and not necessarily the music, so it’s definitely different.
What is your favorite song to perform?
D Kirk: Of all my songs, my favorite to perform is “Understanding”. There is always a lively response when people hear that song. They just love that good time vibe of the flow of the song. The song just makes you want to have a great time. You can turn up to it in the car on your way to work or at a party. Just good vibes.
Which famous musicians do you admire?
D Kirk: I admire Kid Ink. He’s truly a dope guy and having that swag is just lit. He’s always been a guy who makes songs you can vibe to. It is definitely always an experience when I listen to his music
